Ria McBride
Name: Ria May McBride
Date of Birth: 15 February 1915
Date of Death: 1999
Summary
I pursued equal employment opportunities for women, as a founder member of the National Advisory Council on the Employment of Women. In this role I helped set up the Accident Compensation Commission. From 1978 to 1980 I was one of the first full-time human rights commissioners.
Work Experience
I was the first woman appointed Chief Clerk of the Public Service Commission (which preceded the current State Services Commission). I became the first non-Māori to be appointed to the Māori Welfare Division of the Māori Affairs Department, serving as Administration Officer before becoming head of the Housing Division.
Volunteer Experience
Education
Honours and Awards
The Ria McBride Award Recognises Outstanding Women Public Servants. In 1985, I was awarded as part of the New Year Honours.
Personal Interests
Personal Life
I spent most of my life in Tauranga. I was the doyenne of BPW Women. I was an esteemed Public Servant, a great friend to BPW Wellington. I was a Wellingtonian, from one of the founding families of Johnsonville as well as a great lover of the province, I was actually born in Geraldine though. I was the senior female public servant prior to the World War Two and found all my efforts to go to war thwarted by the Public Service, who recognised my skills and abilities and were determined to keep me here in New Zealand to ensure the ongoing efficiency and stability of the public service.
