Margaret Matilda White
Name: Margaret Matilda White
Date of Birth: 9 January 1868
Date of Death: 1910, died as a result of tetanus from stepping on a nail
Summary
I began as an apprentice for well known photographer John Hanna in 1890. I began my training as a hand colourist and moved on to learn about the mechanics and chemistry of photography. At one point I opened my own studio on Queen Street in Auckland but unfortunately it didn't go very well and I shut it down within a short period of time.
Sadly, as with many great artists, my work was not valued during my life time and only in the present day have people understood the great contribution to social history that I made with my work.
Work Experience
1890-?: Apprentice, John Hanna. Trained as a hand colourist, learned about mechanics and chemistry of photography.
Undated: Owner, photographic studio, Queen Street, Auckland
Volunteer Experience
Volunteer, Auckland hospitals (varied)
Volunteer, Whau Lunatic Asylum, Auckland
Education
Honours and Awards
Personal Interests
Performing with my Amateur Theatrics and Amateur Operatics groups in Auckland.
Personal Life
I was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. After my father passed away and my mother remarried, we moved to New Zealand in 1886 with our new combined family.
My marriage at the ripe old age of 32 came after my plans for a studio and professional photographic career didn't pan out the way I intended. I have to say I wasn't too keen on the idea of marriage and being a wife but I gave it a good go and even moved with my new husband Albert to Mackytown near Waihi after our wedding in 1900. Sadly while there, I stepped on a rusty nail and passed away from tetanus at the age of 42.
